Welcome to the best network of internships, mentors and advisors you didn't know about!

Still on the fence?

Everything you need to launch your career, and beyond.

Having a hard time figuring out what career path is right for you? Or maybe you already know and want to test drive your dream job? Regardless of where you stand, we’ve got you covered.

Spend a professional semester or summer in Washington, D.C. with The Washington Center (TWC), and discover that thing you're passionate about, define your career path and create a plan to help you get there.

For over 40 years, we’ve worked with thousands of college students like you to help prepare them for the transition from college to the professional world.

Our professional semester is designed to help you identify the right career path, so you can leave with clear next steps and a network of professionals to help you along the way.

A full-time internship that will rev up your resume

You don’t have to worry about finding a quality internship on your own. Once you've been accepted, you’ll be paired with a dedicated advisor who will work with you to explore what skills you have to offer, the type of internship site and ideal organization size for you and other aspects that can weigh heavily on how comfortable and capable you will be at your internship. We won’t stop until we match you with an internship aligned to your professional goals and career aspirations.

We have a network of over 600 internship site partners. We work closely with our partners to ensure you will get access to:

A supervisor invested in your success

At the end of the semester, you’ll undergo a 360-degree evaluation through the SkillSurvey Career Readiness Report, a comprehensive tool to assess your skills following your internship experience, which you can also leverage when it comes time to apply for jobs after college. You’ll identify your strengths and improvement areas for eight critical competencies employers look for, along with a roadmap for further development.

Meaningful work that aligns with your interests

Projects and assignments you can own

  • A goal-oriented approach to work

"As I’ve started to apply for jobs, I'm finding more and more that my TWC internship with the U.S. Marshals really jumps out on my resume. Now with that experience and training, I’m at the head of the line when I apply for jobs because it isn’t going to cost employers any time or money to train me. I’m already certified and ready to go.”

Professional development to ace the job search

Gain career planning and job search strategies that don’t just help you land your first job, but set you up for lifelong success in the workplace. Here’s a sneak peak of our professional programming:

Career advising
You’ll meet regularly throughout the program with a career advisor to discuss your goals, strengths and challenges, and how to overcome them. Together, you will work on a detailed plan to help you achieve your professional goals.

Small group sessions
You’ll take part in small group sessions with your peers designed to help you develop your professional identity, build lasting connections and learn how to navigate the job market like a pro.

Career-readiness workshops
Attend workshops and events that provide you with all the tools you’ll need to hit the ground running in your job-search. From how to write a federal resume, understanding workplace benefits or how to negotiate a salary, these activities will boost your competitiveness in a global economy.

A powerful network you could only get in DC

Tap into an influential community of employers, mentors, career advisors, faculty and 60,000 successful alumni in a city where networking is king. You’ll attend programs, events and activities to network with professionals in D.C. and explore relevant topics in multiple industries.

"When I applied to TWC, I had no idea what I wanted to do as an intern, let alone what organizations were available. I am a double major in business and healthcare, so I knew I had a broad range of options ahead of me. Fortunately, TWC has an internship matching process that helped me narrow things down to specifics.”

"TWC definitely helped me feel a lot more confident in applying for jobs. They helped me so much with resumes, networking and how to communicate professionally. Beforehand, I thought that I knew everything about the professional world, but after going to D.C. I realize that I would not have been prepared without it.”

“The nation’s capital is the headquarters of so many international organizations, and I’ve had the chance to network with so many people from those organizations this semester. I have gotten to hear what they do on a daily basis and see if that is something I would potentially be interested in.”

Academic growth in a
real-world context

You’ll take part in one of our courses designed to help you step back from your daily work and reflect through an academic lens on broader aspects of what goes on around you as you experience Washington, D.C.

These courses are similar to the ones on your campus, but have the benefit of being based in D.C. So, if you’re taking “Campaigning for a Cause” for example, you’ll be learning from someone who has worked as a professor, but also worked in advocacy with the United Nations and major NGOs for 25 years before that. Many of our professors bring a mix of academic and professional experience so not only are they great resources for you academically, they are also likely a great person to network with.

"I had the pleasure of taking the Crisis Communications course. This course focused on the volatile nature of social media and the challenges companies face when social media attacks. Ultimately, I want to pursue a career in publishing, so thanks to this experience, I’ll be more aware of possible crises that may arise when working with a sensitive project or content leaks.”

The TWC Difference

Anyone can get an internship, but not every internship will get you ready to hit the job market and launch a career doing meaningful work that matters to you. If you want to stand out in a competitive job market, the typical internship isn’t going to cut it.

Here's why.

The neighborhood
Your neighborhood will be NoMa, one of D.C.’s most vibrant and centrally located neighborhoods in the city with easy access to public transportation, shops and great restaurants.

“I had the chance to meet people from across the nation and the world who have different backgrounds and beliefs than me, people who challenge my preconceptions and force me to look at issues from different viewpoints. I’ve gained friends, colleagues and mentors, and through it all have learned more about what I believe and who I am.”

Plus, you can earn up to 12 credits for the program, so you won't miss a beat and graduate on time!
